SCARED FOR MY LIFE! Sailing at 22 knots boat speed down HUGE waves (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 105

We just got 22 knots, and I’m telling Riley we need to take a reeve now, babe, come on Last time here on the east coast of France we anchored at an island called Porquerolle This morning we set off for a new adventure to a new country and its a beautiful day Oh cool there’s a castle up there Today we were going to Corsica which was about 116 nautical miles as the crow flies We’d heard tales from other sailors about crystal blue waters and endless castles It was a place not to be missed and we would be sailing down the west coast line starting at Calvi We were expecting a max of 30 knots from the West but up until about 2:00 p.m. The winds were fluky and there was a lot of pulling up and down the sails all morning, but there were dolphins Yeah Riley was just grumpy cause there was no wind and now the airs gone cold, and there’s clearly some serious wind coming so we’ve got to hoist the main again quick lets go We were so focused on getting the mainsail back up and to get moving again we’d forgotten about our code D That was still up from this morning pass me the cranker This was a big mistake. We should have had it stowed away. We had it blocked off by wrapping It around a cleat But only once and the force of the wind was able to unfurl it We headed downwind but we still had a fair bit of wrangling in order to get her under control The winds going in a different direction to the waves It is extremely windy I want to show you something look at that Look at that Brilliant So yeah, that’s the conditions And we’re just sitting level it’s amazing. We are probably averaging ten and a half knots I’d say, we’ve got 25 knots from apparent wind angle is 120 so we are fairly flying along at the moment got a full main up and a full jib so apparent wind speed of between 17 and 18 and I don’t we don’t need to put a reeve in the main just yet we’re going along quite nicely we just got 22 knots and I am telling Riley we need to take a reeve now, babe, come on this is ridiculous 17 knots apparent and we’re absolutely fine. There’s some weird hum that happens hey Riley, we need to take a reeve What’s that weird hum that happens I dont know but lets not wait to find out Yeah, that’s when the boat babe thats when the bow buries and you’re f*&$% we’ve snapped.. we’ve got the line off It’s all good Oh Riles im scared, i dont wanna go 22 knots.. yes you do no i dont Oh shit yea babe no Thats a big wave right here Coffee machine, just went mental I just went to lay down in our hull, because im pretty tired And there’s just no way I can relax down there, you can really.. Hear all the noises down there a lot better than out here and like at one stage There was no gravity and Riley says that’s ok, but it lasted for just so long. I was just floating on my bed and I couldn’t hear any water sounds on the hull 14 knots So I’ve just come back upstairs cuz yeah, I don’t like being down there by myself What do you do when your boyfriend’s the captain I cant fight him It was 28 knots. It’s it’s 23 now so like there’s not generally a lot of relaxing going on on any boat in those conditions We just happen to be going sailing 17 and there’s a hum, 17 yeah 18 Theres that hum Alright whats going on guys? We’re going to take a reeve Now we’re all really excited here on La Vagabond. I’ve just called out another patrons name congratulations to Emily Hare We would love to have you on board if you can make it If 22 knots boat speed it’s not something you’re interested in don’t stress We usually sit on about 10 knots so yeah, otherwise if you’d like to go 22 knots I’m sure Riley wouldn’t mind attempting that one again cool. Thank you for your support and yeah Cheers How was your little nap darling good, i woke up to Riley saying, “get your favourite bottle of wine” But instead what’s that thing? Matteiu gave us to going-away present and it is, I’m not going to try and pronounce it but people from France will understand, It’s local and apparently it’s quite Sweet like honey It’s from the Brittany Yes, its from Brittany, Merci Mattieu You know me too Well Mattieu this is absolutely delicious, it’s like a I cant explain it that is so damn good, its like honey and cider, but without the fizziness A well-deserved drink for the team, we’d arrived in Corsica and had clocked 22 knots as our top speed on La Vagabond it was to be the hot topic of our conversation for weeks and weeks to come they’re right behind us We are just coming into our anchorage now, and there’s no moon tonight, so we’re gonna need a lot of torches, its gonna be quite scary I just brushed my hair, this is what happens all the time Im not used to coming into an anchorage at like 10 knots So ive got Elayna, — night vision Ive got her looking out for buoys and I dunno, It’s way different hey, coming in at this speed but we’re still in a hundred meters of water, so it’s fine, but it’s just vastly different to pottering in at four knots Thanks for watching join us next time as we roam around the famous town of Calvi

  1. 1. Open another browser with youtube and search for "Shark Fin Blues" with the album cover tile.
    2. Start it with this video at 5:30 or so and mute the Vaga volume
    3. Turn up The Drones volume
    4. You're welcome

  2. With Riley’s hat and sun glasses on, he looks like kid rock lol anyone else see that. Or is it just me.?

  3. Nobody:
    I mean absolutely nobody..
My dad (in this same situation): Well boys it looks like its a good day to die, lets get it.. yeeha hahah riding 9-10 metre waves like they're nothing

    Absolutely motoring though

  4. Wow ….
    WOW …..
That was very cool . I can't truly understand how you feel going that fast , but it's way more than just going fast . It takes a lot of skill to handle a Cat that fast and size of the boat . Its like you understand the waves and the boat as one . Not many people live to do that . You can sail your whole life on a boat and never have a chance at going that fast . But you knew what to do ..and that's what Life is all about . Take Life by the Balls and go with it .
Now on the other side of things , it's very dangerous to push a boat like that and I'm sure you know that already . But try not to do that anymore .

  5. Ive spent the last month binging as much as the channel as i can 😂 every spare minute i get im watching SLV and i dont have one regret about it! Stay safe out there guys and bring on more adventures!

  6. Passengers on that passing Holland America Line ship had quite a show if they were watching, but it would have been a bit messy if La Vagabonde had in fact dug in and nose-dived. She is, in the end, a "performance cat" and faster than most other cats in her class, so I understand the exhilaration. I do have have mixed feelings about this vid, it's exciting and you got away with it, but in all honesty, Elayna was absolutely right, that reef should have been taken sooner. I realise it's easy to criticise when you're not there yourself, but maybe some lessons were learned? Some months earlier, Dutch-flagged Lagoon 52 cat "Greatcircle" hit 27.2 knots in 50+winds while on passage from Gibraltar to Ibiza. That was supposed to have been the record, certainly for this class of catamaran, but it does show that catamarans can handle some pretty freaky conditions.

  7. Should u have a life vest on at this point? When outside working the boat?
I don’t know boats but if u fell overboard.

  8. What a life. You are a lucky man bro. Sailing around the world with a beautiful woman by your side… One that could rivial the most beautiful woman from any country you visit on your travels. Must be nice. Lol, even though it sounds like your not from the USA, would that be considered white privilege, to have the ability financially the sail around world? Does White Privilege even exist anywhere outside the US? Probably not lmfao!

  9. The scirocco blows from Africa and blows across elba and corsico coming down at high speed. We raced along the coast 1x with 6 people on a cat. Smaller than yours… I have never before or after experienced such speed. It was too thrilling to be scared.

  10. Hey I’ve seen your films non-stop for a week or so, wondered, have ye considered to soundproof your engine-bay. Just like you would if us had a car – perhaps ye can find that on Google (car soundproof.) it usually quite effectively.. Cheers:)

  11. You guys know differently but because of its configuration the med weather at sea is often underestimated by people, tricky when waves are at odds with the wind!

  12. There is always an element of danger. What if the guy falls overboard? Will she be able to handle the situation?

  13. Anybody else notice that black police Catamaran with lights on trying to pull them over for doing 18 in a 6.5 knot channel?

  14. Awesome video guys love seeing all these parts of the world that I haven't been to been to a lot of them but not all of them!

  15. Omg like 2 weeks ago i was literally in porquerolles on a holiday haha idk i find it cool also i know im like super late lol

  16. This is insane. Did the adults forget there’s a baby on board? You’re in the middle of the ocean if something goes wrong you’re all screwed…the level of disrespect Riley showed Elayna by not caring about her being scared is such a red flag not only as an adult but as a significant other…

  17. Cats can pitch pole, the final factor, hit a swell dig the hull , bury it, come to a stop, ugh, stuff breaks things fly, not good, no do overs, people and boat can get hurt badly

  18. I LOVE the humming hulls!! My hobie hums just before lifting a hull, or better yet if I can hike out and hold windward down to keep both in. I don't know exact cause but it seams to be a differential harmonic forming between both hulls when one is flying a little bit higher than the other. The Hobie makes a whhhhooooo or deep mmmmmmmmm hum, Id love to hear what the LaVaga's big pontoons sound like at full chat. I can only imagine its so loud and being in the salon the sound must be like coming form all around you at once. PS 10kts in 11-12kts of true is EPIC your house flies! Now get a trapeze set up and have Elay hang out in 18 kts flying a hull in your racing house.

  19. Echoing some of the other comments about a lack of basic seamanship. These are interesting videos, but aspiring sailors should not use them as ‘how to’. And the crew seems largely oblivious to many of dangers around them. Just one example that I haven’t seen mentioned previously: the knives were left on the magnetic strip in the galley. One really hard knock and those things would be flying through the cabin!

  20. I notice that there is a rope with the tail end in the water as if the catamaran is towing something. Could you explain its purpose, thanks?

  21. omg I started flallowing you guys!!!!may God with You All throught out your Journeys!!! If You ever need a Cook I would do it for free cause the experience and The View Alone Would Be A Dream come true…

  22. Great hull thru water shots . Real action . More hull sliding through the water please . The hull makes everything else possible ! ! Beautiful as a naked lady or a dolphin sliding thru the ocean ………

  23. What an awesome yacht. Best of all worlds. Have a nice slow sail or outrun a cruise ship while enjoying stability. 😮👌👍🇺🇸

  24. Seems like in the push for content there has to be some drama. Either real, imagined or made up.

Sounds like she needs to learn to read the instrumentation. He just said 10 knots of speed with 17 knots of wind. May have hit 18. She is whining for nothing.

  25. I like to sail, even in rough seas. The security and the thrill have to be balanced, I would wear a lifejacket, when the ocean and the storm talking that loud to you, no matter how old you are.

  26. Fantastic episode, very exciting. Please ignore all these armchair experts who seem to want you to produce safety videos every week. It's not what I want. They're all sitting at home doing sweet FA, you're actually living it. And they're too dim to realise you don't need the benefit of their wonderful experience because you've accrued your own. Go hard and go fast where you can. Cheers from a chilly North Wales.

  27. How's this compare to what you are going through now? Scared for your life then? You should be now, and for your child's as well.

  28. I would be concerned that the GF was scared to death, that alone would be enough to cut the speed. Something that has to be considered, is, how is the boat rated, how strong is the masts and rigging. To have something break on the high seas would be a big bummer, maybe a May Day call. I looked up the ship, model 45 designed for families and cruising, cruising is not racing. Five years sailing in calm waters is not the same as dealing with gale force winds. Sail with caution and the wisdom of the sea.

  29. Sometimes…..with huge waves and strong winds…….on the bow……u have to let like 100 mts.of rope with an ankor……so that if the nose of the Sailboat sinks u don't do a flip forwards….
    Love from Miguel in Munich
