GM calls on the government to mandate the sale of electric cars

>> GUYS THIS IS A HEAD SCRATCHER. GM IS CALLING ON THE GOVERNMENT TO MANDATE THE SALE OF ELECTRIC CARS. WHY? THE USUAL LITANY OF REASONS, GOING TO CREATE JOBS, REDUCE FUEL CONSUMPTION, CO2 EMISSIONS, MAKE ELECTRIC CARS MORE AFFORDABLE CURE ALL DISEASES AND ENSURE THE REDSKINS WIN THE SUPER BOWL I’LL KICK THIS OFF BY TURNING IT OVER TO THE ONLY PERSON HERE PROBABLY LIKE ME DRIVING A 67 IMPALA GROWING UP GARY K., WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS?>> A WHAT?>> [LAUGHTER]>> 67 IMPALA.>> LOOK ALL I CAN TELL YOU IS IN ONE WORD I DO NOT LIKE IS MANDATE ESPECIALLY FROM A GOVERNMENT THAT IS INEFFECTIVE. LET THE MARKET DEAL WITH THIS. I THINK WE ONLY USE ABOUT 40% OF ENERGY FROM PETROLEUM PRODUCTS NOW SO THE MARKET IS WORKING AND I DO BELIEVE EVENTUALLY ELECTRIC CARS ARE GOING TO FLUSHISH AS BATTERIES LAST A LOT LONGER, JUST GM, GO AWAY, LEAVE IT ALONE TRISH: I THINK THAT YOU’RE RIGHT I THINK THAT THIS IS EVENTUALLY GOING TO BECOME THE FUTURE, BUT WE WERE BUYING A NEW CAR RECENTLY, AND I LOOKED BRIEFLY INTO THE ELECTRIC CAR SPACE, AND MY CHILDREN KINDLY REMINDED ME MOM, YOU’RE ALWAYS RUNNING OUT OF BATTERY ON YOUR PHONE. WE DON’T WANT TO BE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD RUNNING OUT OF BATTERY IN OUR CAR. I WAS LIKE, GOOD POINT AND THE REALITY IS IT’S JUST HARD TO CHARGE RIGHT? IT DOESN’T LAST LONG ENOUGH, AND YOU DON’T HAVE ENOUGH CHARGING STATIONS. I MEAN AT LEAST YOU KNOW YOU CAN FIND A GAS STATION ON THE EXIT.>> THE PERSONAL MOTIVATION FROM GM ITSELF BECAUSE IT MAKES THE VOLT AND THEY HAVE OTHER ELECTRIC CARS IN THE LINE UP AS WELL AND THEY WANT TO ENSURE THEIR BUYERS AND THEY’RE NOT SELLING THEM AT LOSSES WHICH THEY CURRENTLY ARE.>> YOU HAD ME UNTIL YOU MENTIONED THOSE FOOTBALL TEAM BECAUSE I’M A COWBOY FAN WHICH MEANS I DON’T WATCH FOOTBALL IN JANUARY ANY MORE WHICH IS MORE UPSETTING THAN THE FACT THAT THE REDSKINS ARE BETTER THAN MY COWBOYS BUT I GREW UP IN TEXAS AROUND THE OIL FIELD AND DROVE A TRUCK WITH A NASCAR MOTOR IN IT THAT GOT 4 MILES TO THE GALLON. I LOVE THE GASOLINE ENGINE BUT I DO THINK THIS IS THE FUTURE AND THERE’S A ROLE FOR GOVERNMENT AND ELON MUSK HAVING TO BUILD-OUT THE TESLA CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE. HENRY FORD DOESN’T HAVE TO BUILD THE GAS STATION I THINK THIS GOES TOO FAR. BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT?>> I DISAGREE WITH YOU, JOHN. LOOK A LOT OF THE HIGHWAYS WERE ACTUALLY FOUNDED ON TURNPIKES WHICH WERE BUILT A LOT WITH PRIVATE MONEY. YOU KNOW WHY GM IS TRYING TO DO THIS. IT’S THE SAME WAY LARGE COMPANIES WANT TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE, TO DRIVE OUT THE SMALLER COMPETITORS. GM IS ONE OF THE FEW COMPANIES OUT THERE THAT CAN SCALE UP HUGE WITH ELECTRIC CARS. OF COURSE, THEY WANT GOVERNMENT BACKING, BUT THEY ALSO KNOW THEY CAN DRIVE OUT THE LITTLE TESLAS OF THE WORLD, BECAUSE THEY CAN PRODUCE ON A MASSIVE SCALE. THIS IS ALL ABOUT THE BOTTOM LINE. IF YOU LET ONE CORPORATION DICTATE TO THE GOVERNMENT TO HELP YOU OUT WHAT COMPANY IS GOING TO DO NEXT, HERSHEY COMES OUT AND TRIES TO GET THE FDA TO APPROVE CHOCOLATE AS A DRUG TO EAT EVERY DAY.>> [LAUGHTER] EXACTLY. ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE OUT THERE. AGAIN –>> GARY K.?>> THE WORDS MANDATES, FEES, FINES, REGULATIONS THROW THEM OUT THE WINDOW.>> GARY K., ARE YOU ACTUALLY SAYING THAT COMPANIES WOULD HAVE A VESTED INTEREST AND CAN BUY

  1. don't think it needs to be mandated or regulated they just need to give people a tax write-off or some kind of benefit for buying a electric car and eventually the market will switch but there's too many poor people out there right now they cannot afford a brand new electric car we already have a war on poverty a war against poverty like passing laws in the middle of the country that takes people's driver's license for anything and everything just about which makes it hard for people to go to work and make money which creates more poverty

  2. If they can sale it then do so if not they need to build something the public will like. Ma be something that will work and can be repaired how about a dependable affordable vehicle ? Boy would that be great but I guess that is out of the question.

  3. As a certified mechanic I can say this about GM automobile 1st off GM still makes crappy cars with way to many issue's that cost customer's money to repair. I work on more GM cars and trucks then any other automotive manufacturer. So GM 1st built a quality vehicle before making bold statements. Remember GM the American tax payer had to bail you out years ago do to crappy GM quality products!

  4. Oil prices have not gone down even though we are a net exporter. Prices never will go down and if we enter s recession they will go up just as they did in 2009. I was paying $4.65 per gallon in Florida which was hard hit by real estate drop because it's a second home market. Yip $65.00 to fill up

  5. PUMP THE BRAKES!!! Did Toyota need MANDATES in the 1970s when their Quality and Fuel Mileage was kicking the Big 3's collective Arse! Remember that GM got a Massive Bailout from TAXPAYERS 10 years ago. CHEVY…..you can do better…."let the best car win"…..remember, ..I Do!

  6. I grew up in the Detroit area in the 80's, I was a die hard Democrat member of the UAW and buy American was all I ever did but as time has gone on, the party left me, the union was backing a party that backed illegals who drove down wages and took work away from Americans. The democrats left me long ago because they went bat shit left… Since the bailout I now only buy Ford if I buy any of the big 3 at all, it's all a shame really because I would rather support American companies, but at least I still make sure the cars I buy are mostly built in the U.S. so long as they are not built by union workers.

  7. Tell GM to pound sand up their assholes with a broom stick. The government has no business making people buy things they don't want to. Like health insurance and electric cars.

  8. They are loosing tons of money on their electric cars , they must think its only fair that Ford , Toyota , Fiat must loose the same dollars so GM can stay competitive . If you're not making money selling those cars , then don't sell them , don't force others to have to sell a product that nobody wants . GM made their decision to produce the cars because they thought they should jump in to compete with Tesla . Well Tesla is not making any money either . No one wants the product . Why buy half the car , for more money , with reliability problems , when you can get an internal combustion car that has the proven reliability , and much longer range and don't have to have an outlet to plug into .

  9. Limited to travel. Length of charge time. Battery life. Cost of electronic controllers. Fire, These are concerns I have.

  10. You better invest $7 Trillion in the electric grid. Unless you don't like ACHeat. Hot Water. TV. Internet etc.. As the grid is at 95% capacity. And we still have brown outs! Now stick 50 Million cars on that grid. It will go down so fast.

  11. After the Saudi Debacle, we need to be Energy Independent.

If we don't do this we are owned by middle east oil

Unless we WANR middle east Oil.

Then go on ahead. Keep screwing everyome over

  12. Uncle Sam can't force people to buy a new car of any type, let alone a very unusable electric car-except for those living VERY close to work. Buy the car…uh, NO! 'It doesn't work for me AND I can't afford it.

  13. Could GM be any more Self Serving….When the Ruling Class tells me something os good for me, I know it’s time to run for the hills…Manmade Globale Warming anyone….

  14. GM was the Cause of Public TRANSPORTATION Decline. GM helpied and paid at their own cost ,the removal of thousands of miles of interurban trolley lines in cities.

  15. Climate change is real. People will not change their behavior until the climate is bad. When the climate gets real bad it will be too late. Get ready for a Mad Max future.

  16. No way. Govmt has no legal authority nor any other imagined authority to do such. This would be an abberration; an illegal encroachment on private enterprise. When the time is right, demand will regulate the offerings. Period. NO MO GOVMT INTERVENTIONS ANYWHERE.

  17. Can always count on Trish to say some dumb clueless shit like she did with Denmark. Hard to charge? You plug it in overnight. Run out of battery? She would have to drive over 6 hours straight in a Tesla. Nowhere to charge? Even in the middle of Wyoming you’re never more than 30 min from a charger and it’s growing by thousands of locations a month.

  18. Chevrolet is as American as it gets….. Sucks to see Americans Turn their Back on them…. New American way of life huh…?

  19. make a mandate that devolves the government into nothingness. that will make us happy in the usa. we were made great with this thing called a free market, not the market that makes you buy what they want you to buy. how has ANY of those worked out. not good for the consumer. (this thing will not put an entire word on a sentence without breaking up the word. what the heck, no matter what the word, but will put a space as the first word in the next line.)

  20. I will never buy a useless, expensive, short lived, and polluting EV. The gasoline and diesel engine cars are superior in every way.

  21. I have never seen a GM vehicle with all the lights working. Crap cars and trucks. I would never buy a car from them. GM sucks.

  22. The market demand should determine what is produced. Not a mandate. For those against fossil fuels I ask, what fuels the tractors that plant and harvest your food? What fuels the transportation that brings products to market? Certainly not electric anything. Research how very expensive electric cars are, not just upfront cost but maintaining them. Those batteries are not environmentally friendly, either. I will not be told what I can and cannot buy. Only my ability to pay determines that. And, there is no global warming.

  23. I don't see where electric cars are a savings benefit since you will be paying up the ying-yang for electricity. Also, that electricity is created largely by fossil fuels which create more pollution. Ya think?

  24. We're in trouble now car guys,if GM is pushing for this,it ain't right no forced buying of electric cars no government incentives NO WAY DONT DO IT,. GOVERNMENT

  25. HELL NO. HELL TO THE NO. If people want to buy them that is a free market choice but don't force me to buy one or force me to chip in on yours.

  26. Is the electric car really a gas savings? How will the increased demand for electricity be generated if by not burning more oil? If you factor in the increased oil used to generate the electricity at the Power Companies then is the electric car really environmentally more friendly?

  28. Many commenters: "keep the government out of my life". Meanwhile, the government is subsidizing gasoline by a huge military presence in the Middle East, protecting shipping lanes, etc, and we're also subsidizing it through higher healthcare costs and early deaths due to the resulting air pollution, which kills tens of thousands per year. (Rightwing warriors: no need to ask me for sources. I trust you know how to use Google.)

Wake up folks. Government is deep in your lives, and the folks in the video are simply putting on a show for ratings. Ultimately, the problem is both political parties: one party intentionally deceives about their role and funnels money to the wealthiest (remember Trump's tax cut for the uber wealthy and the corporations?), while the other party is honest but incompetent about the role of government (e.g. ignoring that social security and medicare are not sustainable).

Personally, rather than mandating a minimum number of electric vehicles, I'd rather gasoline not be subsidized and that pollution be taxed to pay for the harm it causes to all of us in health / life costs. I'm not suggesting we kill the subsidy outright immediately, but rather transition over 10-15 years. Companies and people need the time to adapt so we don't jolt the economy.

  29. Chocolate is a drug though, theobromine is a more complicated form of caffeine. The FDA are hypocrites. One drug is legal the other isn't, the difference? Lobby money is spent to keep one illegal. Anyway, they want the industry to move faster which I can understand. In our early history it was A LOT EASIER to just go out and build roads. Now the price to change anything is 1000x what it used to be because of fees, regulations, rules, and every bribery mechanism conceivable.

  30. GM took bailout money and it’s in a joint venture with the Chinese Communist Party-owned state company SAIC Motor. Why the F K should I care what commie GM says?

  31. A mandate is the same as price control. If people are forced to buy electric cars, there will be less incentive to make those cars efficient and competitive.

  32. Hmmm. With Trump & cabal in power, GM's request is moot. It may have all the right words but ain't likely to happen. To me it could be just an attempt to reposition GM in the public eye as FOR people surviving GLOBAL WARMING (not a PC person here). Just sayin'…

  33. If you can't make them well enough get people to buy them build them better but the government should not mandate it if they do I'll walk or ride a bike. Not the place of the government to tell me what to buy, or force me to buy it.

  34. Fox Business – Trish is Completely Wrong, spewing more FUD against the Electric car.
Batteries don't last ? – most EV the batteries last for 250 Miles or more.
EV hard to Charge ? – its as easy as Plugging in your car Each NIGHT. fully charged by Morning.
Not Enough charging stations ? try Plugshare , they have online MAPS that show Charging locations.

  35. China Did it 8 years ago to their car companies…. Who wants to copy a model for the future.. I like the toxic car fumes that cause bigger hurricanes and flooding… Its the American Way to be last when it comes to thinking ahead. Its Inevitable!

  36. Below you will see psychopathic Americans that love revving up their engines to intimidate you and have no respect for the environment or fellow man. That's why they hate on innovation.
