5 Things You Should Never Do in an Automatic Transmission Car

5 Things You Should Never Do in an Automatic Transmission Car

rev up your engines,
today I’m going to talk about the top five things you should never do to your
automatic transmission if you want it to last, now automatic transmissions like
this Honda cost a lot of money to fix if they go bad, rebuilding them can cost three,
four, even five thousand dollars, so you want to take care of them and I’m going to
show you five things that you never want to do with them, now you never want to
drive an automatic car through deep water and here’s why, you see that little
black piece right there, well this black piece right here that
I’m tapping, that’s a vent you have to have vents on automatic transmissions as
the fluid gets hot and expands and contracts to release pressure, and if you
go through water that will suck water into the transmission,
and let’s just say water and automatic transmissions do not go together, if you
get water in your automatic transmission sometimes you get lucky and flush it out and
it’ll work, but often it will destroy the entire transmission and you’ll need a new
one, and the second thing never to do is, never accidentally have your car go from
drive into reverse while the cars moving now this Honda is a better design, the
shifter is on the dash, that’s kind of hard to do, but a lot of cars have them down
on the bottom down here, so if yours is like this, make sure you don’t
accidentally hit it and rip it into reverse while you’re driving down the
road, because it will destroy the transmission, I’ve had more than one of
my customers teenage kids, when they’re learning how to drive and screwing
around with their friends, do that hit it in reverse and they just destroyed
the transmission, and if they’re older cars they just ended up junking them, now
the next thing not to do with an automatic transmission car is, leaving
it in drive if you’re idling for a really long period of time, because leaving it in
drive if you’re idling for a long time that can lead to overheating of the
inside of the transmission, if you’re going to be sitting there for really long time
just shut the car off or at least put it into park, because in Park,
it’s not directly connected, the torque converter isn’t sending a lot of power,
so it won’t get quite as hot in park as it will and drive, now that’s bad thing
not to do with your automatic transmission is, don’t go around doing
burnouts all the time doing burnouts is one of the worst
things you can do for an automatic transmission, and of course burnouts aren’t
good for any car, I know you’re going to say, oh Scotty your always having pictures of
burn outs, well those are standard transmission cars, that’s not that great
for them, but you’re just going to end up burning out the clutch which is a lot
cheaper than replacing the whole transmission, now the last thing not to
do has to do with your automatic transmission fluid, if you have a later
model car, don’t listen to this nonsense this says no need to replace ATF under
normal driving conditions, it’s a bunch of nonsense,
well I’ve dealt with that in a recent video, it just basically says, oh the
fluid is good for the lifetime of the transmission, but then the lifetime of
the transmission is less, and less, and less, because you don’t want dirty fluid in,
you want to change it regularly and yes modern cars use synthetic fluid that
can handle heat better and break down less, but eventually it does break down,
I still say change your transmission fluid every sixty to eighty thousand
miles, regardless of what these ridiculous
directions say, realize if you take care of your transmission it can take care
of you, this Honda’s been taken care of, it’s got one hundred ninety five
thousand miles and even though Honda’s have relatively weak automatic
transmissions, this one is still shifting fine, so now you know what the top five
things you shouldn’t be doing to your transmission are, to make it last as
long as it possibly can, so if you never want to miss another one of my new car
repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

  2. Scotty, my girlfriend has a 2009 Prius. I hear a clunk from the front wheel every time she hits the break and comes to complete stop and another clunk after she hit the gas. This doesn’t happen if she break very slowly. She took it to the mechanic and they replaced the axle and the noise still there. It is increasing with time. She took it again and they didn’t know what that noise was. I jacked the car and tried to wiggle the wheel and kicking the wheel but couldn’t reproduce the noise. I tired to shake the car to check the engine mounts but, again, couldn’t reproduce the noise. Please help. Thanks.
    I’m concerned.

  3. Considering even trying throw my car into park when the accelerator jammed didn't even phase the and popped a little message "shift operation could not complete" across my display… Methinks I'm safe from shoving my car into reverse while moving forward.

  4. Can you do a video explaining the CVT Nissan Transmission please, I just bought one and want to know how to make it last the longest!

  5. I'm British, why am I watching this. Never seen an automatic before and now I'm tempted to buy one to see if it it'll actually destroy the transmission. Manual all the way !

  6. Ok so I just want to say that if you car gets put in reverse while you are going down the road you or one of your passengers intentionally put it there because you have to push in the button on the shifter in order to go from park to all others and from neutral to reverse, which is right between drive and reverse

  7. I'm actually proud of myself. I know almost nothing about cars but i knew all these things! He forgot to mention the headlight fluids though and which colors you need to use.

  8. I have a two 1987 ae82’s and one is a automatic. Whilst teaching my missus to drive she has shifted into reverse more times than I can count and the car is a rank it is completely fine and runs like a dream. (Tried to teach her manual she burnt my clutch)

  9. If your car is PRND 321
around town drive the car in 3rd gear will extend the life of the transmission

And don’t reverse your boat into water using your auto transmission car

  10. HELP MY TRANNY CANT FIX MY. CVT 2003 SATURN VUE BEEN IN AND OUT WITH HIM SINCE MAY !! ITS SEPT I JUST GOT IT OUT ASKED HIM TO CK IT SAID EVERYTHING IS FINE AFTER HE TEST DRIVED IT RUFFLY I HEADED TO SAN DIEGO STARTED LOSING POWER THEN I STOPPED TO SEE WHATS GOING ON IT WOULD GO FRONT OR BACK SO I DROVE SLOWLEY FINALLY GOING UP A HILL IT WOULD NOT GO UP OR GO IN DRIVE…I HAD A GUY PUSH ME IT COASTED IN DRIVE TO THE VALET I WILL BE AAA TOWNING IT OVER 100 MILES TO A DIFFRENT AUTO MACHANIC TO WRITE ME UP A STATEMENT THEN IM TOWING IT BACK TO THE TRANNY GUY IN SANTE FE SPRINGS CALIF..TO EITHER FIX IT COMPLETELY IN 3 DAYS OR GIVE ME MY $1400 BACK !!!!

  11. For a 'weak' transmission car my 90s Honda Accord still drives really well!

I kid gloves my cars though, well mostly, I still have fun with them.

  12. Never put the car in neutral while driving and then change to drive while the car is still running. It will ruin your a.transmission. Just search for that in YT.

  13. Love how i clicked this vid and saw a 99 firebird doing a burnout. I have a 99 firebird 😂 and i did a burnout the other day

  14. Ok. I just subscribed into Scot's YouTube because I have been watching his videos for awhile. In a process of posting my car issues or ideas, I was unable to ask him questions. I can only comment to videos he already posted. I was very disappointed.

  15. So shifting from DRIVE into REVERSE while driving can destroy a transmission?!

    YOU DON'T SAY!?!?!

Next you'll tell me you have to put it in "Park" when I'm going to park it

  16. Word of caution about shifting to park when idling- a lot of the older Chrysler transmission would shut down the pump in park. Better to shift to neutral.

  17. I once put a power glide two speed auto into reverse at 35mph, locked the back wheels instantly and the torque reaction was enough to twist the engine far enough it broke the distributor cap, transmission was fine, they built those things tough.

  18. Bro. 10 million views in 17 hours. And he just posted a video yesterday. Scotty. You rollin in it bruh. Keep it up. Love the vids.

  19. Is it safe to shift to nuetral THEN shift back into drive, all while moving forward? I.e. I'll shift into nuetral while approaching a stop BUT sometimes I don't need to stop & shift back into drive.

In my experience, the vehicle responds smoothly & my fuel economy is up, braking (tapping) becomes way easier (unless in situations that naturally call for lower gears I.e., downhill/uphill)

  20. There's an automatic that:
Won't go into reverse or park while driving forward (computer won't allow it)
No torque converter to wear at a long light
    Fastest shifting
    Programmable shift points
    Adaptive TCM computer
Won't wear the transmission holding a hill while stopped as it won't hold a hill the brake delay will for five seconds.
Don't have to worry about fluid getting contaminated.
Don't have to ever change or top up fluid.
No fluid.. Dry electrical servo system

A Ford DCT on a 2011-2016 Focus or Fiesta.
    ….oh wait.

  21. Hi i changed my brake master cylinder and now when filling the brake fluid it sucks into the system but does not fill the Reservoir no visible leaks were is the fluid going. Two quarts of fluid. 2011 vw jetta se thank you.

  22. But you can always tow a car with an automatic transmission, otherwise this video had 6 things never to do…unless Scotty was sloppy.

  23. Hi. I have a 2004 chevy Corvette with an automatic transmission. I always put it in 1st gear and shift up and down between 1-3 gear like I would driving a stick. Highway driving I use D. Will manually shift an automatic transmission hurt the car when doing it?

  24. some times i forget what am doing especially im in hurry goshhhh im gonna train my self to be careful because its so expensive to fix the problem thanks for sharing this

  25. Scotty, is it bad to put it on neutral while you're waiting for the green light. And what about the border line, I've spent 5 hours on the border line once.

  26. Hi scotty can you do a demo how you should change gears in a manual becuase I had 90k on my manual and the gear box broke down my me mechanic said it wasnt my driving rather my vw caddy van they just make week gearboxes for them it's so common that vw doesnt make good gearboxes can u explain how or what I can do to prolong the life of my gearbox as it cost 5k to put a new gearbox in and take 2 months for it to arrive from germany becuase you cant by them need to order them directly from manufacture

  27. I just bought a 2012 Hyundai Sonata with 136000 miles on it and I don't know if the previous owner sometime in the past changed the transmission fluid. Should I change it??

  28. ARE TRANSMISSION FLUID & MOOTOR OIL INTERCHANGEABLE ? HOW ABOUT BRAKE FLUID & WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID ? ALSO — HOW OFTEN SHOULD A MAN REPLACE THE OLD AIR IN THE TIRES ? WHO SELLS THE BEST AIR , DOES ANYBODY KNOW ? I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT MACHINES , AS MY LAST JOB WUZ WATCHIN OUT FOR THIS CUNTRY , BEIN A PRESDENT .
